Reply to This topic. May 2, AM edited October I've seen a lot of people suffering from this issue, so I decided to share how I dealt with it. The DX12 mode now creates it's own cache so that might be a good option for some people, but despite this advantage the DX12 mode is still less smooth and less stable, so overall provides worse experience. When the cache is being generated the graphics driver will use all available CPU resources to do it as fast as possible, this is what's causing the stutter, because on most PC-s the game doesn't have enough CPU resources left to provide smooth gameplay AND also generate the cache files.

Intel k 4. The OP is correct that this may help some players. Normally when playing GA and it is a new map, as soon as I spawn in there will be a slight delay of sec with some microstuttering. Some of the maps seem to take a little bit longer, but after a couple of minutes the game runs smooth.

I do use Nvidia Inspector and it helps.

There should be more information about Nvidia Inspector in the Off-Topic section of the forum. I also agree with the OP that the shader cache tweaks they have shown may work or not work for you. Even if it's only a slight performance increase the changes won't hurt your system. I keep the game on DX11 - don't see a much stuttering except for the first game which I go to Arcade to get that over with.

January 12, AM edited January I know this thread is old however I was able to from what it seems solve the issue by using DDU display driver uninstaller and reinstall latest nvidia driver. This not only deletes the old cache but other settings as well. I do run the game in dx11 as dx12 isn't fully supported as it states. Graphics are max out with frames from fps depending on what's going on.

It's a driver problem, rollback to Scaar5 View Profile View Posts.Because stuttering is such a complex issue and AMD had such great knowledge into their drivers, AMD assumed that stuttering was occurring due to the applications and the OS, things that were out of their control. Since that time AMD has been hard at work on fixing the issue, producing new driver builds later last year and in the first part of this year to address the issue.

There is still work to do — AMD quickly fixed their DX9 issues, while DX10 fixes are in the process of being rolled out — but in many ways this is a post-mortem on the issue rather than being an explanation of what AMD will do in the future. Not every game is fixed yet, but many are.

The first is what happened at a technical level to cause the stuttering in the first place, and what, if anything, can be done about the remaining stuttering.

The answer to the first question is that what went wrong depends on the game. AMD did not go into specific detail about individual games, but they did lay out the types of issues they ran across.

For example, resource limits may occur in the application or the driver, triggering a stall that in turn triggers stuttering. Discarding the constant or vertex buffers too often was one such cause of this, as it would mean the driver would need to wait for one of the buffers to actually become freed up before the job could proceed. Other times the issue was the driver itself misbehaving in a way AMD never expected.

The end result was yet another block that triggers a stall that triggers stuttering. Yet still other problems are in the application and the OS itself.

A recurring theme in all of these issues was that they were easy to fix. It may only take AMD an hour to find the cause of a stuttering instance, and then even less time to make a driver change to deal with it. This is the purpose of the context queue, to help smooth things out at the cost of some latency. In a heartbeat situation the next Present gets delayed coming out of the application for whatever reason, which results in the rendering pipeline feeding from the context queue for a bit while nothing new comes in.

Eventually the block is cleared and the application submits the next Present, at which point FRAPS records the Present as having come relatively later. As a result the next Present hits the context queue sooner than average, resulting in the early frame as picked up by FRAPS.

In this scenario, at the end of the rendering pipeline every frame could be displayed at an even pace despite the unevenness at the input, but FRAPS would never know. But unless the heartbeat pattern occurs with high regularity or the size of the beat is enough to let the context queue drain completely, the impact from this scenario is far less than having the frames come out of the end of the rendering pipeline unevenly.

Game Stuttering is a very common problem that can be faced by anyone, even if you have a high-end PC with a powerful graphics card, processor, tons of RAM, and equipped with all the latest gaming hardware. What happens in stuttering is the game freezes for microseconds or fraction of secondskipping the next frame, and this ruins the whole gaming experience. Sometimes it may be a one-time thing because of the game issue or whatever, but if it is happening continuously at regular intervals, then it is a big issue, which needs to be sorted out.

Stuttering is also referred to as micro-stuttering because it lasts for a very short period of time only. Stuttering may or may not lead to lower FPS, as it is possible that you are getting an average of 60 FPS in the game, but having terrible stuttering issues.

However, in some cases stuttering may lead to lower frame rates that can be very troublesome. I think stuttering is more annoying than getting low FPS, because during low FPS you might know its cause, and can take proper measures to increase to some extent. Also, you can still game without losing control on low frame rates, but in stuttering, it surprises you with sudden jitters and hiccups that make you lose control in the game, especially when it is a faced paced FPS game.

Stuttering in games occurs due to either hardware or software issues, or even both. In some cases, the hardware is the culprit while in some software or drivers can cause the problem, and in rare cases, both hardware and software are at fault. I have personally encountered stuttering several times in various games, and most of the time I have managed to it after hours of testing and research.

The main thing is that there is no single cause for stuttering, and you need to figure out the root problem by taking into account all the factors. So, to help out gamers that are struggling with the stuttering problem, here I am going to list down the main causes of game stuttering with their proper solutions or fixes.

This generally happens when the overclock is unstable, but sometimes it can also happen when the overclock is pretty stable in other applications or in benchmarks. I have encountered this issue personally in some games, where the game would even crash several times in the middle if I had overclocking done to my CPU. The same thing applies to GPU or graphics cards too. Both play a very important role in the smooth running of games, and it is generally a good idea to have more than the amount that is recommended for the game.

I was playing Far Cry 4 the other day with my just-acquired Radeon HD hell of a card, performing generally better than the youngest AMD multi-gpus, BF4 crossfire profile is great for FC4 by the way and after an hour through the game heavy stuttering happened to appear, only going away upon reboot. I minimized the game and realized the mouse pointer "stuttered" when moving. If I dragged any window all over the screen, it would stutter all around.

I closed the game but the issue persisted. Thus I started to think it was not gpu-related.

I waited for the system to cool down, shut down the pc and powered it again. In a matter of one minute into Prime, the whole system started "stuttering" again - a simpler way to describe it is laggy frame-skipping.

Prime can run for hours without returning a single error, so my CPU is working properly, but it "stutters" the system. I never found what the issue really was, but as I changed hard drive to an SSD and installed fresh windows, the issue went away. Maybe then I would download I tried this, stutter fest everywhere, a lot of tweaks disable according to radeon mod. Not recommended IMO. Gonna clean install and get back to normal. There are multiple potential causes for microstutter, with possible solutions that may or may not work. But let's start by first explaining microstutter.

Let me first explain that microstutter isn't the same as the stutter associated with low framerates, or in some cases massive dips in performance while a game loads new assets.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance had severe stuttering at launch, mostly due to loading new textures and models for a complex environment. Microstutter is more subtle and often harder to measure objectively —the best tools like Nvidia's FCAT involve color tagging of each frame received by a high-end capture card.

SLI and CrossFire are both seeing less support these days, however, so I'm going to focus on the most common culprit these days: vsync and framerate caps. If it's not, the display shows the same frame as the previous update, giving you 30fps, and if a new frame is ready you get 60fps.

Microstutter occurs when the framerate fluctuates just enough that you might average 60fps, but some frames come a bit early and others come a bit late, or in other words the frame pacing is just a bit off.

That's one reason I prefer much higher framerate caps. If an engine puts in a hard 60fps cap, it tries to have a new frame ready for each 60Hz screen refresh, and often other parts of the engine 'slow down' so that the frames don't finish too early, physics and netcode don't get messed up, etc. However, if there's a slight hiccup in the engine—a new texture needs to be loaded, or a new model, or maybe just some other background task—you can end up with a frame arriving 0.

Oops, there's some stutter. Depending on the game, this can be a frequent occurrence, and some people end up preferring a constant 30fps rather than aiming for 60fps and getting microstutter. Neither of those are desirable, especially on a fast PC. One option to combat microstutter is to disable vsync, but that has drawbacks as well.

Now when a frame is ready from the engine, it will show up on your display. The problem now is that this can lead to tearing —where the next frame arrives in the middle of a screen update. If there's a lot of movement and action, you get a clear line across your display, and if the game is running at 60fps on a 60Hz display the tearing can remain in roughly the same location on your display for a long time.

This was clearly visible in The Crew 2, and it occurs in just about every game where there's a 60fps maximum built into the engine. There's not much you can do with games that include a framerate cap, especially if that cap is linked to physics, AI, network code, or other elements—that's generally not the 'right' way to code a game engine, but that's a different topic.

You can try lowering your quality settings, in the hope of seeing less frequent dropped frames and stutter, but even that doesn't always work.

The more expensive solution is to throw hardware at the problem. Nvidia and AMD recognize the problem with microstutter, and the solution is to have hardware that can sync the screen refresh rate to the games rather than the other way around.
